A subject line is the first thing people see that makes them decide whether or not they want to open an e-mail; it's limited to 100 characters. When sending e-mails out to your customers, it is crucial to get their attention and make sure that your e-mail gets opened. After all, the subject line is one of the most important parts of the e-mail, and studies have shown that it takes consumers about three seconds to decide whether or not they want more information. Below, find some tips and advice on making your subject lines stand out from the rest.
1. Do not use ALL CAPS. CAN YOU READ THIS VERY EASILY? It is hard for the human eye to read in all caps and more than likely, your e-mail message will be deleted.
2. Do not use excessive punctuation marks, such as a exclamation points (!). SPAM checkers are apt to throw these emails into the junk folder.
3. Pull out your thesaurus and think of new ways and words to say what you mean. For example, FREE is a term that is used all the time. Try something else like “complimentary” or “on the house.”
4. Prioritize. Make sure that the most important information in the subject line is right at the beginning.
5. Don’t be too wordy. Most experts say that subject lines should be no more than 50 characters long.
6. Don’t waste space saying who the e-mail is from. Your from label will already be present in your customers’ e-mail boxes, so there is no need to type that information again in the subject line.
7. Proof read. Never have a typo or error in your subject line. It’s always a good idea to have a fresh set of eyes look over your communication before pressing the send button.
