A note from Jill
Our newsletter is a little late this month as July got off to a rough start for many in the western suburbs of Chicago when a crazy storm blew through at midday on July 1st, knocking out power for hundreds of thousands of people in the Chicago area and creating significant damage to homes and property.  The power outages have been followed by a massive heat wave and many suffered the effects of both simultaneously, with very uncomfortable results.  Several villages cancelled all of their July 4th celebrations as the impact was just too overwhelming.

Fortunately, Glen Ellyn was able to hold their parade and fireworks and give everyone a much needed reason to celebrate and appreciate all that we have.  And for those of you who feel like you missed the 4th of July, how about celebrating Bastille Day on July 14th with a visit to Jazz in Glen Ellyn?  And the opening of the Summer Olympics on July 28th will be a great way to cheer on America.
At Marcel's we are very proud of all the products we carry that are made in America and we have featured several of them in this month's newsletter.  There are so many more -- our locally made products such as textiles from Juju Bags (which we featured last month) and Shine Handmade, fine wood products from Trees & Clay, Spencer Peterman, John Boos, and Jonathan Spoons; cookware from All Clad and  Lodge Manufacturing and so many more.  We support and celebrate the local artisans and companies who have worked hard to keep their products domestically produced and are proud to offer them to our customers.  Happy July to all of you and thanks for your continued support of Marcel's and all of your local businesses, wherever you are!

 CHEF TALK WITH COLEEN GRAHAM

When I hear "Made in America" my first thoughts go to cheese. Being a Master Fromager, I can’t help but think of beautiful hand crafted small batch American Artisan cheeses. Right now fresh goat and sheep’s milk cheeses are in season all across America. Just the thought of creamy washed rind sheep’s milk camembert from Green Dirt Farm in Missouri, so buttery with just the slightest touch of funk, I’m in heaven!

Even closer to home, near Champagne, Illinois is Prairie Fruit Farms' goat cheeses, near Danville is Ludwig Farms producing Dutch style cheeses and their star cheese, the Vermillion River Blue.

While attending the Vermont Institute of Artisan Cheese at the University of Vermont, I met so many of the local cheese makers. I visited there farms and helped them make cheese. It’s a lot of work and a tough way to make a living. The animals are treated so humanely, like we treat our pets, and you can sure tell by the quality of the milk and cheese.

Most of these hand crafted cheeses are not available in the grocery stores. On the first Saturday of the month, The Great American Cheese Collection opens its warehouse for the public to come, taste, and purchase these cheeses (4727 S. Talman, Chicago) from 11-2. It’s our way of supporting the small batch cheese makers whose Artisan cheeses are made in America.

Here is a great summer dish. Made on the grill, it can be served with mixed greens on Meatless Monday or as a side for a hearty grilled steak.

Asparagus and Portabella Mushrooms with Goat Cheese

1 t. chopped rosemary
2 cloves chopped garlic
2 T. fresh lemon juice
¼ c. olive oil
Salt and ground pepper
1¼ lb. asparagus- ends trimmed
2 large portabella mushroom caps
2 oz. crumbled fresh goat cheese

Preheat grill.

Whisk together in a bowl the rosemary, garlic, lemon juice, salt, pepper and olive oil. Brush the asparagus and mushroom with the mixture to coat.

Grill the asparagus first turning after 2-3 minutes, you just want them to have light grill marks. Next grill the mushroom caps top side down until browned about 8-10 minutes. Cool slightly. Plate the asparagus in a serving platter.

Slice the mushrooms and arrange them on the asparagus. Drizzle any additional dressing, salt and pepper, and sprinkle the top with the goat cheese

I’m waving my flag for USA Pan bakeware!   Although I use it for just about anything baked, the brownie bite pan yields dessert that makes everyone feel special. Rather than bake a pan of brownies, cookies, or cake, I divide up the batter into bite size personalized desserts. Thanks to USA Pan’s environmentally friendly non-stick surface, baked goods ease right out of the pan every time. Now that’s my kind of baking!

I absolutely love our line of unrefined sea salts, rubs, herb blends and sugars from s.a.l.t. Sisters! Based in Goshen, IN and founded by Charmane Skillen in 2007, the line was created after Charmane learned about the health benefits of unrefined sea salt. Whether smoky, spicy, citrusy, herbal or sweet, s.a.l.t. Sisters has the perfect seasoning to complement any dish!
Jill Foucre:  Owner
I love the Caldrea homekeeping products for their fresh, non-fussy scents and their high content standards, making them ideal for anyone concerned about the impact of cleaning products on the environment.  Made in the USA, they all evoke the kitchen for me with their herbal, citrus, and fruit fragrances.  My favorite is Ginger Pomelo with its undertones of basil and grapefruit.  Refreshing!
