How DMARC Affects Email Delivery

Yahoo and AOL have recently made changes that are causing problems for users of their email services. Put simply, they are using a technology called DMARC to inform the internet that any email with a "From Email Address" of their customers can only come from their servers. What this means to you is if you use a Yahoo or AOL email address as the "From Email Address" in NCR Customer Connect your emails will be rejected by most mail servers on the internet (your contacts).

This is not something we have control over. It is the result of a decision made by Yahoo and AOL in an attempt to control email spoofing (aka phishing). It has the unfortunate side effect of bouncing legitimate emails sent by the real account holder in any 3rd party application. For more information about this change, read the following articles from MarketingLand.com - Yahoo Info & AOL Info

We do not recommend using Yahoo/AOL email addresses as your "From Email Address" when sending emails through NCR Customer Connect. Most of your emails will be rejected if you do.

You have two options available to resolve this situation. The quickest and simplest is to switch your email provider away from Yahoo/AOL and update to the new "From Email Address" in the affected application. However, this leaves you open to the possibility of your new email provider implementing the same policy as Yahoo/AOL in the future.

The more robust option is to use your own domain name as the "From Email Address" instead of Yahoo/AOL. It is beyond the scope of this article to explain how to obtain your own domain name and setup email to use that domain name. Each registrar will have its own process. If you have your own domain name already, check with your registrar to find out what you need to do. If you do not have your own domain name, click here for a simple process of how to obtain one.

The "From Email Address" can be found on the Manage/Defaults tab and on Campaigns/Step 3 for each email, if you chose to use a different address from the default.

Important Note:
NCR Customer Connect will notify you daily through email, which is sent to both your Login email address and From Email Address, if any scheduled emails in your account have a "From Email Address" that uses DMARC email authentication. It's important that you change the "From Email Address", in the affected emails, as soon as possible to prevent emails from being rejected by email servers. The daily email notification will stop once the "From Email Address" is changed to an address that does not use DMARC email authentication.

The notification email is similar to the one seen below and includes the page or the campaign/email name for each email affected.

The email states the "From Email Address" needs to be changed in the following places in Customer Connect:

  • Manage/Defaults Page
  • An email whose campaign name is Weekly Newsletter and email name is Week 20
  • An email whose campaign name is We Miss You and email name is We Miss You Mailing

For the emails, navigate to Campaigns/Step 3 and change the "From Email Address", for each one.
