Summer is in full swing now that July has arrived. We are highlighting Glen Ellyn's much anticipated annual events in this issue of Cook Create Celebrate: Fourth of July festivities, Jazz in Glen Ellyn & the Sidewalk Sale. Kid's Camps have been so popular that we have added new sessions. As always, mouth-watering classes for the adults too!

JULY EVENTS & HAPPENINGS
SAT, JULY 4th:
A full and festive day of activities await! Kick off the day with the Freedom Four Four Mile Run. Gather the family for Glen Ellyn's 4th of July Parade; this year the theme is "Blue, White & Red: North to South Instead" - reversed due to road construction. Click here for a detailed parade route. Do not miss the grand fireworks display when the sun goes down at Lake Ellyn. Marcel's will be closed on Saturday, July 4th.
 
 
SAT, JULY 11th:
Experience live jazz in a downtown festival setting featuring a line-up of innovative Chicago Jazz musicians beginning at 4:30 pm. Don't forget to pop into Marcel's Market for a delicious variety of cheese, charcuterie, snacks and beverages to complete your evening. This event presented y the Chamber of Commerce transforms Main Street Glen Ellyn into a jazz garden oasis! Marcel's will be open until 10 pm on Saturday, July 11th.

 
JULY 23rd - 25th: SIDEWALK SALE
Find the best bargains all through the village during the Sidewalk Sale Celebration presented by the Alliance of Downtown Glen Ellyn and the Chamber of Commerce! Don't miss this once-a-year chance to save big and support your local stores all at the same time. Beginning Thursday, July 23 through Saturday, July 25, Marcel's will once again be participating in this popular annual event. Main Street will also feature live music and dance performances. Remember to shop where your heart is!

Q&A WITH CHEF HEIDI KISE

West Suburban Gem: We’re talking about food, right? A Toda Madre/Bien Trucha is my suburban joint. Drinks and food are executed flawlessly … and now that they are in Glen Ellyn AND accept reservations, life just got a little sweeter!

Favorite Book: Right now it is a wonderfully intense mystery by a childhood friend, Derek Rempfer, called Hearts Left Behind. Beware, it’s a page turner.

Favorite Food Destination: There’s no contest. Italy, anywhere in Italy. Warm bread, fresh pasta, cured meats, cheese, fresh vegetables and wine.

3 ingredients always in my fridge: Butter, milk and cheese. Good thing I’m not lactose intolerant!

Favorite Aspect of Working at Marcel's: Can I pick just one? From the moment I stepped foot inside, I felt the warmth of this darling boutique that is filled with so many gems, including the staff … the retail staff, the management, the culinary assistants are all there because they truly desire to be there and it shows. The guests in the classes are interesting, interested … and it truly has a community feel to it.

Current Recipe Project:  Perfecting focaccia … stayed tuned, you will see it on my winter menus!

Where is your favorite spot to dine when you’re looking to treat yourself and for when you want something casual and no-frills? For a treat, let’s go to MK in the city, it’s a gorgeous space with delicious seasonal food, amazing service, brilliant wine pairings and full of memorable dates with my husband! For no-frills, I’ll take the family to Cozymel’s! We all love that they make their own tortillas plus the food and service are delish.

What ingredients do you feel are underrated? The underrated onion … no one really thinks about them, talks about them, however they add incredible flavor to just about anything. The other is fish sauce … it is a secret weapon!

How would you best describe your culinary style and point of view? Like most, cooking with fresh, seasonal foods is what you’ll find in our home - food that has been elevated with lots of citrus, herbs and flavor is what you’ll find from me!

Marché: Coming Fall 2015
Not a day goes by without people asking about what's happening at Marché - and we are so excited that you're excited!  The shorthand is that Marché is a cheese shop but it will be so much more -- charcuterie, olives, specialty food, wine, beer, small batch liquor and more! We'll have a few spots where you can sit and have a cheese plate and something to drink or we'll pack it all up for you to go. Order a cheese and charcuterie board for a party or plan your event at Marché. We are planning to be open this fall and are super thrilled about having another go-to destination in beautiful downtown Glen Ellyn. Be it ever so humble, there's nothing like a homemade hand pie. These single-serving pastries, sweet or savory, satisfy as a make-ahead breakfast, lunch, dinner, or picnic basket treat. Once you have the pastry made, and the method down, you can improvise with whatever seasonal goodies you can get your hands on. Leftover sauteed greens for a twist on a BLT, yesterday's roast chicken for the perfect picnic hand pie. And with berry and fruit season in full swing, perfecting your hand-pie skills will be a great way to satisfy your sweet tooth. Three cheers for the hand pie!!
