Yay Spring! Time to Get Back Outside with Your Buddy!

Animal Welfare Journalist, Graham Harper, offers some great insight for making the most of you and your dog's daily walk routine!

"Going for a walk is undoubtedly the best time of day for your dog. In addition to doing their needs, dog walks also allow them to feel stimulated and socialize with other dogs and / or people. Choosing schedules well is essential to ensure that you both have a quality walk and that their day to day life is as good as you would expect.

In this AnimalWised article we will explain what is the best time of day to walk your dog but also offer exclusive advice so that your dog enjoys walks like they never have before!

Best times to walk a dog

To start with, it is important to note that dog walks must always be done at the same time, i.e. a very regular schedule must be followed to allow them to anticipate that they will go out on the street. Although this may not seem relevant, the truth is that dogs are creatures of habit, so being able to anticipate will help them to be more balanced.

In addition to following a set schedule, the frequency of the walks can vary from one dog to another: some breeds, such as the border collie, will need between two and four walks a day, but others such as the pug or, for example, a very old dog, will be content with two. It is not always easy to know how many times to take a dog for a walk, but factors such as their age or level of energy that we observe can help us. Discover on AnimalWised how often you should walk your dog.

Now that you know these previous details, we will explain what is the best time to walk a dog and what is more convenient to do in each of the schedules:

1. Morning

During the morning the dog should be able to enjoy the longest walk of the day, which should last between thirty minutes and one hour, depending on the energy of the dog. The ideal is to take this walk very soon or after the opening hours of offices, when the street is not very busy. It's the perfect time to take them to a park, to the beach or simply to the nearest dog park. It is important to emphasize that in the morning their senses are especially sensitive, so allowing them to sniff all they want is a good recommendation if we want our dog to relax and relieve their accumulated stress. You could also do searching activities outdoors or play games of smell at home.

2. Noon

At this time of day, especially in summer, we must be alert, since it is warmer. Brachycephalic dogs (pug, bulldog or boxer) and older dogs could suffer a heat stroke if the walk is too long. So, we recommend taking short walks in the shade, where they simply can do their needs, sniff a little and socialize. This walk should be between ten and fifteen minutes.

3. Afternoon

Many people often choose the afternoon to take their dogs for exercise and / or long walks , although it is not always the best option. At this time of day, big cities are congested by traffic and noise, which causes a dog's stress levels to rise and they cannot relax and enjoy as they would at other times of the day. If we do not have the option of taking our dog to a quiet area where we can enjoy about thirty or sixty minutes of walking, it is best to take a short and simple walk, lasting about fifteen or thirty minutes at most, in which socializing, playing and being active is the main objective.

4. Night

Finally, the night is usually a quiet time, so it is the right time to favor your dog's relaxation before going to sleep. We recommend taking a very calm, quiet stroll in which the dog can sniff everything they want to without any hurry.

Remember that the hours to walk the dog can vary greatly if you live in a city or the countryside, the important thing is to look at the needs of your dog and adapt the walking schedule so that they can maintain proper well-being, taking into account the indications above."

Harnesses - More Fun, Less Pulling!
HARNESS LEAD - Escape Resistant - Reduces Pull - Fits All (Click on Image.)

"Designed to be used as a harness to alleviate pressure on the trachea. May also be used as a stationary collar lead. Use as a slip lead for short term needs only to avoid prolonged pressure on trachea.

Uses upward lift & release to reduce pulling. This is a gentler way to reduce pulling. The dog's OWN pressure against the leash will encourage him to slow his pace.

Speaks directly to a dog's center of gravity: the upward lift motion of the harness, encourages the dog to keep both feet on the ground.
Tightens around barrel only. No tightening around trachea. No more choking and gagging!"
EZ WALK HARNESS - Lead Your Walks, Don't Let Your Dog Lead You. (Click on Image.)

"Phoebe loves her daily walks. She loves to sniff other dogs, mailboxes, bushes, trash cans, and anything else she can get her nose into. She's also pretty stubborn, so she'll pull you over to investigate everything. But when you try to pull her away to keep walking, you have to pull against her whole body weight, and she nearly chokes herself on her collar.

With an Easy Walk Harness, Phoebe's a completely different dog on a walk. When it's time to keep walking, a gentle tug on the leash is enough to pull her away. The harness rests against her chest and controls her torso, so when she pulls, the harness moves her whole body the way you want, instead of just choking her. She still gets to enjoy her walk, and now you don't have to fight her at every step."

4 Natural Flea & Tick Repellent Recipes For Your Dog

Nobody wants their dog to get fleas. Ticks are no picnic either. Some of us have dogs with pretty severe flea allergies, which complicates matters even more. Unfortunately, conventional flea and tick products are really just chemical pesticides.

You might be thinking, “Well, OK, they’re chemicals. But can they really be that bad? After all, I get these from my vet.” Let’s look at three common active ingredients found in pharmaceutical flea and tick products and you can decide how you feel about their safety.

Fipronil

Dr Deva Khalsa VMD, citing the EPA’s Pesticide Division, says that fipronil enters the body and can be contained in the fat, organs, urine and feces of dogs. Plus, according to Khalsa, lab tests have shown that with longterm exposure at low doses, fipronil has the potential to cause nervous system and thyroid toxicity, thyroid cancer, altered thyroid hormone levels, liver toxicity, kidney damage, convulsions, whining, barking, crying, loss of appetite, locomotor difficulty, reduced fertility, fetus mortality, smaller offspring, loss of hair at or beyond the point of application, moist inflammation, chemical burn and itching.

Freaked out yet? Well, we’re not done. When exposed to light, fipronil breaks down into a molecule called fipronil-desulfinyl which, according to the EPA, is ten times more toxic than the fipronil itself. This means you don’t want to put the plastic vials of fipronil products in the sun; don’t let your dog bake in the sun after application; and avoid the sun for short-haired dogs using fipronil products.

Pyrethrins and Pyrethroids

Many people think the pyrethrins (naturally occurring compounds from the chrysanthemum plant) and pyrethroids (the synthetic counterpart) are less hazardous than fipronil. Sadly, that is not the case.

The Center for Public Integrity found that from 2002 through 2007 at least 1,600 pet deaths from pyrethroid spot-on treatments were reported to the EPA. That’s nearly double the number of reported fatalities linked to flea and tick products without pyrethroids. CPI’s project was based on an analysis of 90,000 adverse reaction reports. Keep in mind that many adverse reactions are not reported so the actual number could be much higher, according to Khalsa.

Pyrethroid spot-on products also accounted for more than half of the major pesticide pet reactions, including brain damage, heart attacks and seizures.

Have an open discussion with your veterinarian about the pros and cons of using any flea and tick treatment and the different options available.  Here are a couple great natural treatment options that we offer!

Sentry Natural Defense

"SENTRY Natural Defense Natural Flea and Tick Squeeze-On for dogs and puppies kills fleas, ticks and mosquitoes for up to four weeks, yet it's safe for use around children and pets when used as directed - even in multiple-pet households. Each carton contains four applications that feature natural active ingredients such as peppermint oil, cinnamon oil, lemongrass oil and thyme oil.

SENTRY Natural Defense® works by attacking a neurotransmitter, called octopamine, which is only found in insects such as fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. Octopamine regulates insects’ heart rate and metabolism. The natural oils found in SENTRY Natural Defense® block octopamine — causing a complete breakdown of the central nervous system — killing insects quickly.

The neurotransmitter octopamine is not found in humans or other mammals, birds or fish, thus these products that are deadly to insects are safe to use around children and other pets, when used as directed."

Furfume Fire

"To minimize exposure to toxic pesticides, Dr. Jodie developed Furfume and Furfume Fire. Dog and cat guardians appreciate using safe natural essential oils to deter summer pests.  Furfume oils are purely distilled and not adulterated, making them different from the perfume grade oils used by other manufacturers.

Furfume Fire has been developed for dogs only.  The addition of Citronella and double the oils of Furfume makes the Furfume Fire more potent.  Dog guardians claim they have used this spray successfully on their dogs to deter ticks!"  Veterinarian formulated by Jodie Gruenstern, DVM, CVA.
Buck Mountain Parasite Dust

"Nearly all insects are immediately disabled and then die after contact with Buck Mountain Parasite Dust (e.g. fleas, ticks, lice, flies, etc.). Fleas and their eggs, larvae and pupae, die quickly when they come in contact with this product.

To apply, dust along the back from head to tail and brush against the hair growth to reach the skin.  Repeat after bath, swim or heavy rain and as needed to prevent infestation.

Buck Mountain Parasite Dust contains Organic Neem (Azadirachta indica, which is very healing and is a vermifuge and pesticide), Organic Yarrow, and Diatom Flour.

Lice, mites, ticks, etc. infestations result in dermatitis of one degree or another. Yarrow is very healing and is a repellent, albeit a mild one, to some insects. Diatom flour cuts the exoskeleton of many bugs e.g. ants, beetles, etc. and they dehydrate and is an active principle in this product.

A combination of neem, yarrow and diatom flour makes a fine parasiticide for use on animals in the stable, home, office, clinic, and in the garden."
