Weekly Update
April 20, 2020

To Our Customers & Community,

As we continue this journey together, we are now at time where we can begin to create our new normal.  We know things will not be going back to the way they were after the Stay at Home order ends. We are working on our plan to create as safe of an environment as we can for our team members, shoppers and donors.  We will share more details in the future to set expectations as well as our plan, which may look more like a gradual opening of all our operations.  Until we are open again, please continue to hold donations to ensure we keep a safe environment around our locations.

Currently our Business Services group that provides light assembly and industrial sewing support is continuing to work on essential projects for local companies, following the latest guidelines for working safely. Our Sewing group is fulfilling orders for cotton face masks and reach out if you are aware of a business in need. Lastly, we hope you enjoy the mission moment story this week of a young lady working in the laundry department of a local hospital that received job coaching services – we couldn’t be prouder of all she has achieved.  Below are ways to reach us as well as support us if you are able:

I look forward to creating our new normal together - emerging from this temporary closure in a thoughtful as well gradual way to create an environment that is as safe as possible for all.

Sincerely,

Nancy Ellis McClenaghan

Mission Moment
              Meet Grace

Grace was participating in an internship program for students with barriers in a local hospital’s laundry department. During this time, she was referred to Goodwill for a community-based assessment to determine her strengths, skills and ability to enter the job market.  Grace was praised for her performance and impressed everyone with her work ethic, pace and personality. Her glowing assessment led her to the next step of applying for a position to transition from an intern to employee!  Goodwill and her internship program helped Grace through the hiring process and when she was hired Goodwill continued to provide job coaching services until she was comfortable in her new position.  She continues to exceed expectations and is well liked by her supervisors as well as coworkers.

The thing Grace loves most about working is the people - she loves working and interacting with everyone who comes through her department’s doors at the hospital.

In Grace’s words, “I appreciate the help Goodwill provided over the last year and really enjoyed working with my job coach. He always made me laugh when I got stressed, helped me learn my job and reach my goals. I like that he continues to check in with me to see how I am doing and how my job is going.”

Outside of work, Grace enjoys running, visiting parks, watching television commercials and taking photos of anything tall like water towers, skyscrapers or smokestacks!

Currently Grace is in the process of applying for a full-time position within her department and we’re so proud of how well she is doing!  Although our work is done, we will continue checking in to ensure Grace is doing well and achieving her goals!

Ohio's Strive for Five Challenge

The challenge is simple: find five people in your life and check-in with them every day for the next 30-days. Ohio's Strive for Five Challenge is a new, statewide awareness campaign to help individuals and families cope with feelings of stress, anxiety, and isolation by connecting with others.

You are encouraged to reach out, connect, and comfort each other while we all work our way through the COVID-19 crisis and social distancing. Peer-to-peer support has great power in helping to calm anxiety and fear. By reaching out via phone, text, email, or even a hand-written note, you can help.

The Strive for Five Challenge was developed by the New York Coalition for Behavioral Health and brought to Ohio by the Mental Health, Addiction and Recovery Services Board of Lorain County.

Quarantine 15 X 15 Outfit Challenge

The Stay at Home order has its many challenges, wardrobe being one of them. Many at home, including Modest Blondie, find it difficult not to stay in pj’s all day. To help, Modest Blondie
challenged herself to put together 15 outfits with only 15 pieces from her closet that she is calling the Quarantine 15×15 Challenge. She challenges us all to try it by pulling together 15 outfits with only 15 pieces of clothing from our own closets. See her creations in the blog link below and we would love to see yours too - just tag @goodwillakron in your Instagram posts.

Earth Day - April 22

Becoming more eco-conscious is easy, small changes can make a big difference. Shift one thing in your regular routine and imagine the difference you’ll make by Earth Week next year! Here are just a few small ideas we can all do while at home:

  • Replace inefficient incandescent light bulbs with efficient CFLs or LEDs.
  • Grow your own organic garden, or join a farm-share group.
  • Compost kitchen scraps for use in your garden — turning waste into fertilizer.
  • Take a shorter shower and use a water-saving shower head.
  • Turn off lights when you leave a room.
And soon we will be back to accept your donations and for sustainable shopping too!
