What are Spam Results and how do I read them?
The Spam Checker provides Spam Check Results.  A Spam Check Result is a ranking that's assigned to your email message. A poor ranking can cause an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to deliver the email to your recipients' SPAM or Junk folder. Once you get the hang of it, it is easy to create emails with great Spam Results.

By using the CHECK SPAM RESULTS button, in NCR Customer Connect, the subject and content of your email is evaluated against hundreds of rules, also used by ISPs to identify SPAM.

The flagged Rules will be listed in the Spam Tests box.
The Rules listed here are not easily interpretable, so you can either click here for a list of rules and their descriptions or type the rule into your web browser to search for their description (ex: The Rule listed may be PLING_PLING, it's description is 'Subject has lots of exclamation marks').

Once you understand the Rule listed, you can tweak the content of your email on Campaigns/Step 6 and return to Campaigns/Step 7 to recheck your Spam Results and see if you have improved the results.

** If changes were made to the email content to improve Spam Results, remember to click Create Plain Text on Campaigns/Step 6 to update the Plain Text version of your email too.

If the Spam Indicator is:
Green - Your email is good. The chance of the email message being delivered to your contacts inbox is very likely.

Yellow - Your email has some content that seems like SPAM. There is a slight chance your email may not get delivered to the contacts inbox. Since the rules and how ISPs use them change frequently, we recommend that you perform a web search on the rules listed to figure out what needs to be changed in your email.

Red - Your email looks like SPAM. Your email will most likely not get delivered to the Inbox. Since the rules and how ISPs use them change frequently, we recommend that you perform a web search on the rules listed to figure out what needs to be changed in your email.

Tips For A Lower SPAM Score
  • Make sure you have a good bit of text in your email. Not one big image, or mostly images. SPAM filters can't read images, so they block content that cannot be read. If you were to make this mistake you may receive a SPAM rule that looks like one of the following. Make sure the text in your HTML version and Plain Text version are very similar
    • HTML has a low ratio of text to image area
    • HTML: images with 2400-2800 bytes of words (or similar)
  • Avoid using "test" in the email subject line.
  • Avoid using "Dear" in your introduction.
  • Avoid saying "Money back guarantee"
  • Don't use many exclamation points !!!
  • Don't use all CAPITAL LETTERS
Tips From the Field
Your fellow merchants reported the following caused SPAM risks.
  • Using the word "blend". If possible, use the word "mix" instead.
  • Using the word "president" several times. Instead of using "president" repeatedly, use "he" where acceptable.
  • Using the word "custom". Try to correct other risk issues first to decrease the SPAM score. If needed/possible, use another word for your content.
  • Many offers including prices with dollar signs ($). Decrease the number of offers included until the SPAM score is reduced or remove the dollar signs.
  • Using the phrase "not accepting checks or credit cards". Try to correct other risk issues first to decrease the SPAM score. If needed/possible, use other words for your content.
