Email Marketing Glossary of Terms

A
Active Contact
Customers/Prospects with valid email addresses (who you've sent email to using NCR Customer Connect). If Confirmed Opt-In feature is enabled, it also includes newly subscribed merchants, since a confirm email is sent to them immediately.

B
Billable Contact
Contacts you are billed for monthly. Billing is based on the highest number of Active contacts during the billing month.

Bounces
The total number of emails rejected by a recipients' Internet Service Provider (ISP). Click here for more details.

C
Campaign
An email message or a series of messages that share a single idea or theme.

Canadian Anti-Spam Law (CASL)
The Canadian Anti-Spam Law is a law that sets the rules for electronic channels to promote or market your organization, products or services. Click here for more details on the law. Click here for how NCR is addressing CASL.

CAN-SPAM Act
The CAN-SPAM Act is a law that sets the rules for commercial email, establishes requirements for commercial messages, gives recipients the right to have you stop emailing them, and spells out tough penalties for violations. Click here for more details on the law.

Clicks
Refers to the number clicks made per campaign. The act of pressing a mouse or similar input device to activate a hyperlink on a web site, thereby leaving that site and going to another.

Click Distribution
The percentage clicks on a particular link. This number is derived by taking the number of Total Clicks for one link and dividing by the number of Total Clicks among all links.

Complaint
Recipients who have marked your emails as SPAM.

Contact
A person who has a business relationship with you. They are also people who you're attempting to create business relationships with.

Converted Prospects
Prospects who have been converted to a Customer. The contact is a converted prospect if the contact's first sales date occurred after their import date.

CounterPoint Discount Code
A coupon code that is setup in Counterpoint.  See Counterpoint documentation on how to set this up in Counterpoint.

CPOnline Promo Code
A coupon code that is setup in Counterpoint Online. See Counterpoint Online documentation on how to set this up in Counterpoint Online.

Customers
Contacts who have made a purchase from your store or website and have a customer number.

Default Email Settings
These are the email settings on the Manage/Defaults tab.

Discount Code
A coupon code that is setup in Counterpoint. See Counterpoint documentation on how to set this up in Counterpoint.

Email

Messages sent and received electronically through an email system.

Email Marketing
The use of email to promote a product or service.

Email Name
A descriptive name to help you identify the email (on Step 2 the name provided is not seen by the recipient).

Email Sales Dates (on the Submission Results)
The dates selected for sales to be attributed to an email.

Email Subject Line
The subject line is seen by your email recipients and is a short description of what the email is about. Try using a compelling subject line to grab the attention of your contacts.

Facebook
A social networking site located at www.facebook.com.

Firewall
The part of a computer system or computer network that blocks unauthorized access to that computer or network. A firewall is an excellent way to protect against viruses and hackers.

G
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format)
GIF is a file extension and a file format for storing graphical images up to 256 colors.

H
HTML Email
HTML email includes customizable fonts, images, and body styles. HTML is much more interesting and can generate higher response rates than plain text emails.

Hyperlink
Text or an image on a web site that, when clicked on, takes the user to another web page, either on the same site or on a different site.

I
Invalid Contacts
Customers/Prospects with invalid email addresses. These are bounced email addresses.

ISP (Internet Service Provider)
A company that provides access to the internet.

J
JPG (Joint Photographics Experts Group)
JPG is a file extension and a file format for images, but it is properly referred to as JPEG - Joint Photographics Experts Group - this is the committee that created the JPEG standard. JPG is better than GIF for photos as GIF files can only have 256 different colors and JPG can have millions.

K
Key Business Indicators
The key indicators of your business - Sales, Tickets, Average Tickets, Items Per Ticket, Margin Amount, and Margin Percent.

L
List
A database of customer or prospect email addresses. This database may also contain first & last name, address, phone number, etc.

M
Mailout
A configured email that has not  been sent yet.

Mailout Submission
A configured email that has been sent one or more times.

O
Opens
Emails your contacts opened and viewed.

Open Rate
The percentage of recipients of a mailing (emailing) of a particular message who actually open it and (presumably) read it.

Opt In (Subscribe)
The act of signing up to an email list or newsletter

Opt Out (Unsubscribe)
The act of removing oneself from an email list or newsletter.

P
Permission Reminder
A message within your email footer reminding contacts they signed up to receive your emails.

Plain Text Email
Plain Text emails are text emails only. Not everyone can receive or view HTML emails, so creating a plain text versions is very important.  You plain text version of your email can be created on Step 6.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics)
PNG is a file extension and a file format for images. PNGs are not restricted to the 256 color limitation of GIF files, support better transparency options and have better compression but do not support the multiple frames and simple animation that GIF files have.

Promo Code
A coupon code that is setup in Counterpoint Online. See Counterpoint Online documentation on how to set this up in Counterpoint Online.

Prospects
Contacts who have never made a purchase at your store or website and may or may not have a customer number.

R
Recipient
A contact included in the submission of an email.

S
Sales Dates (on the Submission Results)
The dates selected for sales to be attributed to an email.
 
Scrubbed 
A process that verifies if a new email address is a known, good and active. Click here for more details.

Segment
A subset of your full contact list consisting of records that match specific criteria. Segmenting allows you to target your email communications with information that is relevant for certain groups of contacts.

Sent
Emails delivered to contacts.

Social Media
Forms of electronic communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content. Examples are: Facebook, Twitter & YouTube.

SPAM
Unsolicited commercial email sent to large number of email addresses. There are many reasons your emails may be marked as SPAM in the recipient's inbox.  Click here for more details.

Subject Line
The subject line is seen by your email recipients and is a short description of what the email is about. Try using a compelling subject line to grab the attention of your contacts.

Submission
A configured email that has been sent one or more times.

Subscribe (Opt In)
The act of signing up to an email list or newsletter.

Template
A template is a basic structure to work from when you are creating your emails.

Twitter
A micro-blogging platform that has become immensely popular and a cornerstone of social media marketing for Internet marketers.

U
Upload
To transfer a digital file from a local computer to NCR Customer Connect or a web site.

Unconfirmed Contact (available only if Confirmed Opt-In is enabled)
Number of contacts who have not yet confirmed their subscription.

Unsubscribe (Opt Out)
The act of removing oneself from an email list or newsletter.

Unsubscribe  Message
A mandatory message within your email footer that provides your recipients a simple way to unsubscribe from your mailings. This is required by the CANSPAM Act.

Unverified Contacts
Contacts whose email address has not been verified. These contacts have not been emailed yet.

URL (Uniform Resource Locator)
A unique address for a file that is accessible on the Internet.

V
Variable
A place holder for data that's different among your contacts or stores. An example of a variable is ##FirstName##. Using this variable within your email will hold the place where the contacts first name will be inserted. When the email is sent the variable is populated with the data on file for the specific contact. Click here for more details.

Verified
Contacts whose email address has been verified. These contacts have been sent an email and it was successfully delivered to the inbox.

W
Whitelist
A list of approved email addresses.

Whitelist Message
A message that asks contacts to add your business email address to their address book, to ensure deliverability of your emails to their inbox. Click here to learn how to change the location of the whitelist message.

WYSIWYG
An acronym that stands for "What You See Is What You Get." Pronounced "wizzy-wig."
The term refers to a kind of graphical user interface (or GUI, pronounced "gooey")used in various computer programs that allows users to see the results of their work as it will actually appear on the screen or in the finished printed product.
